NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT IN NEPAL

NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT IN NEPAL

This Call is addressed to all stakeholders representing business and industry; non-governmental organizations; scientific and technologic communities; farmers and small forest landowners; workers and trade unions; local authorities; indigenous people; women and youth; and are invited to comment and provide feedback on the final document of National Standard Development for forest certification prepared by Green Foundation Nepal.

In order to draft this standard, a notice for all interested stakeholders was published in national newspaper for three chambers specifically social, economic and ecological. Then the group discussed and drafted the standards. Pilot test was conducted in five community based forestry groups and the standard was finalized. There are nine broad principles, which cover social, economic and ecological issues including biodiversity conservation in Nepal as felt by the group.

The development of principles, criteria and indicators in the standard can be a guide for national forest management policies, regulations and legislations necessary to achieve objectives on sustainable forest management at the national level as well as can hold up to the most rigorous standards for sustainable forest management presently in practice at the international level.

The final document of National standards for Sustainable Forest Management in Nepal (GFN-STD-FM-01/2018) has been made available at www.greenfoundationnepal.com.
