Kathmandu, Nepal – CSOs and NGOs working in Nepal have come together to address the immediate needs of local communities in districts highly affected by the recent earthquake. To meet the urgent need for tents for earthquake victims, the organizations are calling for donations in order to provide 1000 tents to those most in need in remote areas of Nepal where the organizations work.
The organizations, which normally work to promote local community rights and sustainable forest management, have formed the ‘Green Relief and Rehabilitation Fund for the Earthquake Victims 2015’ – consisting of well-established non-profit organizations working in Nepal. The organizations are: Federation of Community Forestry Users Nepal (FECOFUN), Himalayan Grassroots Women’s Network (HIMWANTI) Nepal, Global Alliance on Community Forestry (GACF), Community Based Forestry Supporter’s Network (COFSUN), Natural Resource Conflict Transformation Centre (NRCTC), Association of Family and Farm Forestry Network (AFFON), Rastriya Dalit Network (RDN) , Forest Action Nepal, Nepal Permaculture group, ASHMITA Nepal and Green Foundation Nepal along with help from RECOFTC – The Center for People and Forests.
The organizations have each pledged USD500-1000 toward the fund, but more funding is necessary to address the immediate needs of those with no place to live as a result of the earthquake.
The fund is being coordinated and managed by a group of representatives from the organizations. The district level networks of this groups are working closely with their local contacts to ensure effective local level coordination. The group is currently assessing local needs for the longer-term, to develop a2 strategy for rehabilitation and reconstruction.
